As winter takes hold Roscommon University Hospital is reminding people that their Injury Unit is open from 8am to 8pm, every day of the year to treat a wide range of injuries which are non-life or non-limb threatening, as an alternative to visiting an emergency department. The Injury Unit is staffed by Doctors, Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Nurses.
This year staff working in hospitals in the Saolta Group are supporting UNICEF’s Childhood Immunisation Programmes through the ‘Get a Vaccine, Give a Vaccine’ flu initiative.
To mark Positive Ageing Week which runs from 27 September to 01 October, the Frailty Intervention Team at Roscommon University Hospital (RUH) would like to offer advice on healthy eating for older adults.
Fiona Finneran, Senior Frailty Dietitian at RUH said, “As we age we don’t always absorb the nutrients from our food as well as we used to and as a result our body muscle starts to decline. The good news is we can counteract some of this by eating a balanced diet.
As a result of an outbreak of COVID-19 at Roscommon University Hospital, visiting restrictions have been introduced at the hospital.
From today there will be no visiting allowed to St Bridget’s Ward, St Teresa’s Ward and St Coman’s Ward. However, exceptions will be made on compassionate grounds and these visits should be arranged in advance with the nurse manager on the ward. The visiting restrictions will be reviewed next week.
The Roscommon vaccination centre is moving from its current location in the Abbey Hotel in Roscommon Town to Kilbride Community Hall.
The final day of vaccinations are taking place in the Abbey Hotel on Tuesday 17 August and vaccination clinics will commence in Kilbride Community Hall on Friday 20 August.

The COVID 19 vaccination programme across County Roscommon has now moved to the newly established Vaccination Centre located in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon. On 06 January a programme of vaccination of frontline healthcare workers commenced at Roscommon University Hospital, with the vaccine offered to healthcare workers across the hospital, community and other healthcare workers in the county.
The roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign began in Roscommon University Hospital on Wednesday January 6th. Dr Gerry O’Mara, Consultant Physician was the first staff member in the hospital to receive the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine.
Noreen Fallon, a Roscommon native, has recently been appointed as a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner (RANP) in Respiratory Care at Roscommon University Hospital. Noreen is the first RANP specialising in Respiratory Care at Roscommon University Hospital. RANPs are the highest level of clinical experts in the nursing profession in Ireland today.
Roscommon Frailty Intervention Team (R-FIT) is a new, unique, fully staffed, clinical service introduced at Roscommon University Hospital (RUH) to provide a holistic assessment and brief intervention to patients over 65 presenting with frailty.
