University Hospital Galway welcomed Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD to the hospital today, Friday 21 October, to meet with frontline staff and get an update on recent hospital developments.
Staff from the Maternity Department at University Hospital Galway are organising a ceremony to mark International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day on Saturday 15 October at 6pm in the hospital canteen.
The Emergency Department at UHG is moving to a new location at the front of the hospital over the coming weekend. On Saturday 08 and Sunday 09 October the service and staff will relocate to a temporary Emergency Department at the front of the hospital.
This will result in some disruption for patients and the hospital would like to apologise in advance for the additional delays which will be experienced by patients and their families during the move.
The Well Baby Breastfeeding Clinic at Shantalla Health Centre was established late 2021 as a joint initiative of the Department of Neonatology in University Hospital Galway and the Galway Public Health Nursing Department. The clinic is governed by Dr Ethel Ryan, Consultant Neonatologist and Helen Martin, Director of Public Health Nursing, Galway Primary Care.
National Breastfeeding Week runs from 01-07 October and it’s a great opportunity to promote the importance of breastfeeding and the many positive health benefits it provides for both mother and baby. It’s also an opportunity to provide information on breastfeeding supports and to let parents and parents-to-be know where they can access this information and support.
In order to facilitate ongoing construction at University Hospital Galway a section of the through road in the hospital will be closed from 7pm this evening Thursday August 18 to 6am on Friday August 19.
Access to Emergency Department

Staff from Galway University Hospitals gathered together to showcase their academic achievements in research and innovation during the hospitals research and awards day.
The event included over 120 submissions from staff across all disciplines, including doctors, HSCPs, nursing, midwifery and QI.
A new Cardiothoracic ward has opened at University Hospital Galway. The 13 bedded state-of-the-art ward is dedicated to cardiothoracic surgery.
The ward is built to the highest standard and accommodates three isolation rooms, 3 two-bedded wards and a four-bedded ward depending on the needs of the patients.
The Children’s Remembrance Day Committee at University Hospital Galway is inviting families who have experienced the death of a child to remember their loved ones in a special Mass of Remembrance, which will take place on Sunday, 19 June in the Holy Family Church, Mervue at 3pm.
The theme for this year’s Mass is “Enduring Love” and Cathy Quinn a Midwife specialising in Perinatal Bereavement and Lecturer in University of Limerick will reflect on this theme as guest speaker.
Galway University Hospitals Stoma Care Unit is holding a free public information meeting for anyone who has had or is due to undergo stoma surgery. The event will take place on the 09 June in the Clayton Hotel, Galway from 5pm to 9pm with talks starting at 6pm to 7pm. Family members, friends and carers are also welcome to attend.
Entitled “A stoma in your life “, the evening will focus on quality of life issues and looking together at positive influences on living with a stoma.
