In 2016 over 100,000 radiological examinations were performed and reported in the MUH Radiology Department. With a staff complement of 6 consultant radiologists, 25 radiographers and various other crucial grades of staff it is a busy mid-sized radiology department. As the only radiology service in Co.Mayo it offers a wide range of services to a broad range of patients referred from both within the hospital and from the wider community in Co Mayo. It was one of the first sites nationally to adopt the NIMIS ( National Integrated Medical Imaging System ), a filmless digital computerised radiology system which integrates radiology records with most other hospitals in the country.

The Radiology Department in MUH provides a broad range of medical imaging modalities including plain radiography( “ X-ray ”), Computed Tomography (CT Scanning), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Ultrasound, Interventional Radiology(IR), Fluoroscopy(screening), Mammography (breast imaging), mobile ward plain radiography & theatre fluoroscopy. The activity of three satellite plain radiography ( “ X-ray ”)  units across Co. Mayo ( Belmullet Community Hospital, Ballina District Hospital and Castlebar Primary Care Centre) is also coordinated from the MUH Radiology Department.”
