A panel may be formed for CNS/CMS Infant Feeding/Lactation, as a result of this campaign for
Portiuncula University Hospital from which current and future, permanent and specified purpose
vacancies of full or part-time duration may be filled.
Purpose of the Post:
The purpose of this CNSp/CMSp. post is to:
· Deliver care in line with the five core concepts of the role set out in the Framework for the Establishment of Clinical Nurse/Midwife Specialist Posts, 4th edition, National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery (NCNM) 2008.
· The Clinical Nurse/Midwife Specialist (Infant Feeding/Lactation) will focus on improving the breastfeeding outcomes for mothers attending maternity neonatal or paediatric services in GUH
· The Clinical Nurse/Midwife Specialist (Infant Feeding/Lactation) will provide clinical expertise and support to the midwifery/nursing staff working in all areas of the maternity dept.
· The Clinical Nurse/Midwife Specialist (Infant Feeding/Lactation) will ensure the promotion, support and encouragement of breastfeeding throughout the hospital. This will be operationalised by
· Supporting the implementation of the HSE Infant Feeding Policy for Maternity and Neonatal Services & related Baby Friendly Initiative Standards.
· The provision of support and practical information for mothers and expectant mothers. Support to mothers will be dependent upon the service requirements and can vary from one-to-one, group and post discharge support. They will also provide vital clinical input into complex breastfeeding cases.
· Encouraging partners to provide emotional and practical support to the mother.
· The Clinical Nurse/Midwife Specialist (Infant Feeding/Lactation) will provide continuing education and practical skills training across maternity services.
· The Clinical Nurse/Midwife Specialist (Infant Feeding/Lactation) will strive to achieve the overarching aim of the Breastfeeding Action Plan 2016-2021 to increase breastfeeding initiation and duration rates by supporting and enabling mothers to breastfeed.
