Health Officials in Sligo urge the public to stay safe this St Patrick’s Day and help protect the hospitals

Over the St Patrick’s Day long weekend, health officials in the Northwest are encouraging the public to consider all care options before attending Emergency Departments in order to protect them for patients who need urgent and emergency care.

Sligo University Hospital opens new Intensive Care Unit Extension

Sligo University Hospital has opened a new 290 square metre extension to the Intensive Care Unit.  The extension consists of a single storey building adjacent to the existing Intensive Care Unit (ICU) comprising four ensuite isolation rooms with associated facilities. 

Letterkenny University Hospital remains under significant pressure

Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) remains under significant pressure as a result of high attendances along with COVID-19 and flu outbreaks at the hospital.

There were 116 attendances at the Emergency Department (ED) yesterday (Monday). As of 8am today (Tuesday), there are 56 patients awaiting admission in ED. Many of those attending need to be admitted for ongoing treatment which is leading to pressure on bed availability.

COVID-19 and Flu outbreaks at Sligo University Hospital

Sligo University Hospital (SUH) has advised that it continues to operate under pressure as a result of COVID-19 and flu outbreaks at the hospital. Whilst outbreaks are impacting a number of wards throughout the hospital, two wards (Surgical Gynae and Medical 7) have restricted visitor access. As of 8am today, there are 18 COVID-19 positive patients being treated at the hospital.

New Patient Advocacy and Liaison Service Coordinator for Sligo University Hospital

Sligo University Hospital (SUH) is delighted to announce the appointment of Catherine Kelly to the role of Patient Advocacy and Liaison Service (PALS) Coordinator.  

The Patient Advice and Liaison Service Co-ordinator acts as the main contact between patients, their families, carers and the hospital. They ensure that the patient voice is heard either through the patient directly or through a nominated representative.

Sligo University Hospital warns of possible delays as necessary upgrades carried out this weekend

Sligo University Hospital (SUH) will be carrying out necessary upgrades this weekend which may result in delays in our Emergency Department.

The hospital is updating its ITC system in order to link SUH with other hospitals and community services in the region. It is anticipated that the move may cause some delays whilst our reception team navigate the new system.

We apologies in advance for any inconvenience this may cause and ask for patience during this period of change.

Remembrance Service for families who have experienced the loss of a baby or child

Sligo University Hospital is inviting parents and their families who have experienced bereavement through the death of a baby or child or who have experienced pregnancy loss to a Remembrance Service which will take place in St Anne’s Small Chapel, Cranmore on Monday, 21 November at 8pm.

Roscommon Injury Unit appoints Third Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner

Roscommon University Hospital is delighted to announce that Patricia Larkin has recently been appointed as a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner (RANP) in Emergency Nursing at Roscommon Injury Unit.  RANPs are the highest level of clinical experts in the nursing profession in Ireland today and are transforming services for patients through an expanded scope of practice, greater clinical autonomy and decision-making.

Long wait times at the Emergency Department in Sligo University Hospital

The Emergency Department at Sligo University Hospital has been extremely busy over the past few days with high numbers of patients presenting for treatment. Yesterday 139 people attended the Emergency Department with 173 attending on Monday.
