“Heart Failure Doesn’t Stop Us" - Heart Failure Awareness Week across HSE West and North West

As part of Heart Failure Awareness Week (05 to 11 May), staff from across HSE West and North West Heart Failure Services stand united with individuals living with heart failure, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and the entire community, to raise awareness about this common, yet often overlooked condition. Events have been organised across the region with information stands and educational activities in hospitals and community settings.

First brick laid in 90 bedded Community Hospital in Carrick on Shannon

The first brick of the new 90 bedded Community Hospital in Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim was laid by Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill today, Friday May 2nd 2025.

Representing a major investment in health and social care for older people across country Leitrim, the construction of a new Community Hospital located at Ballynamony Road, Carrick on Shannon has commenced and is expected to be complete in Q1 2027.

HSE West and North West showcase Quality Improvements at Inaugural Dementia Conference

The first HSE West and North West Dementia Conference took place in Galway in April in partnership with University of Galway, Ireland. The conference was chaired by Paula Noone, Assistant Director of Nursing for Dementia Quality Improvement, HSE West and North West and Dr Maria Costello, Consultant Geriatrician, University Hospital Galway and Senior Lecturer in Geriatric Medicine, University of Galway.

HSE encourages public to consider all care options this Easter Bank Holiday weekend

Health services in the West and North West wish to remind the public of all their care options ahead of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. 

Bank holiday weekends and extended good weather usually bring additional pressure on the health system but we have plans in place across hospital and community services to ensure patients can access the care they need in the right setting. 

Enhanced Community Care: Improving Health Outcomes in HSE West and North West

The Health Service Executive (HSE) is making significant progress in improving healthcare for older adults and individuals with chronic diseases through the Enhanced Community Care (ECC) Programme. A key pillar of Sláintecare, the ECC Programme is bringing services closer to home, reducing hospital admissions, and enhancing patient care.

Ireland has the highest reported prevalence of Hereditary Haemochromatosis (HH) in the world, and the prevalence is highest in the West of Ireland.

HSE West North West response to communities impacted by Storm Éowyn

In the aftermath of Storm Éowyn, many communities in the west and north west remain extremely challenged by power outages and lack of access to water. The priority for our community health services at this time is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of vulnerable people who may need extra support at this time.

Red weather warning will significantly disrupt HSE Services

HSE West and North West is advising that there will be significant disruptions to health services as a result of Storm Eowyn (Friday, 23 January).

The red weather warning will impact the entire region. During red warnings, people should stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and take action to protect themselves and their properties.

HSE is urging the public to help control the spread of flu

Health services across the West and North West remain under significant pressure with very high rates of flu, we are treating 166 patients with flu across the region today. We are asking the public to please help to control the spread of flu within our communities and our health services by co-operating with visiting restrictions and infection control measures which have been introduced.

Roscommon Injury Unit is here for you every day this Winter

As winter takes hold and as we approach Christmas, Roscommon University Hospital is reminding people that their Injury Unit is open from 8am to 8pm, every day of the year including Christmas Day, St Stephen’s Day and New Year’s Day to treat a wide range of injuries which are non-life or non-limb threatening, as an alternative to visiting an emergency department. The Injury Unit is staffed by Doctors, Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Nurses.
