Children's Remembrance Day Committee to hold Special Mass of Remembrance

The Children's Remembrance Day Committee, University Hospital Galway is inviting parents and their families who have experienced the death of a child before birth, shortly after birth or at a later stage to remember their loved ones in a special Mass of Remembrance, which will take place on Sunday 28 May in the Holy Family Church, Mervue, Galway.

The Clinical Research Facility at University Hospital Galway is marking International Clinical Trials Day on Saturday 20th May with an open day at their facility in the UHG campus.

The event is aimed at past and current participants in clinical trials and their families to thank them for their important contribution to research and is also open to the general public.

UHG in conjunction with AWARE offer free Perinatal Support Group Sessions in Galway

The support group sessions are held every Wednesday at 7:30pm in Unit 8, Merlin Park University Hospital. No referral or booking is needed and there is no charge for the service. The group offers the women the chance to explore options available to them and learn coping skills to reduce the impact of the condition. It also provides a comfortable and safe place where women can share their experiences with one another.

Renmore Irish Countrywomen’s Association group (ICA) have come on board to support the Butterfly Scheme Committee in Galway University Hospitals (GUH) by making twiddle muffs for hospital patients with dementia. Rose Mary Conneely of Renmore ICA came across the idea of the twiddle muff while attending the ICA centre in An Grianan. Rose Mary advises, “While attending An Grianan I was introduced to the twiddle muff concept and received a copy of the pattern which is utilised in the NHS.

Dr Rebecca Weedle, Senior House Officer, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Dr Alan Soo, Cardiothoracic Surgeon, University Hospital Galway won the prestigious Sylvester O’Halloran poster award recently at the 25th Sylvester O’Halloran Surgical Scientific Symposium for their research project on using neutrophil lymphocyte ratio as a simple biomarker to predict complication post cardiac.

Endoscopic Vein Harvesting (EVH) procedure is a first for UHG

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, University Hospital Galway have introduced a new technique for harvesting veins for use in coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG).  Dr Alan Soo, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon and his team performed the first ever endoscopic vein harvest (EVH) for Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) on the 14 February at University Hospital Galway. UHG is the first public hospital in the Republic of Ireland to offer this type of surgery.
