University Hospital Galway (UHG) has become the first centre in Ireland to introduce a nerve blocking probe which uses liquid nitrogen to freeze nerves and remove pain post surgery.
The CryoNerve blocking probe delivers liquid nitrogen at a temperature of around -190 degrees from the tip of the device during invasive surgery.
The Children's Remembrance Day Committee, University Hospital Galway (UHG) is inviting parents and their families who have experienced the death of a child before birth, shortly after birth or at a later stage to remember their loved ones in a special Mass of Remembrance, which will take place on Sunday, 11 June at 2.30pm in Church of Mary Immaculate Queen, Barna, H91C7PK.
Galway University Hospitals Stoma Care Unit is holding a free public information meeting for anyone who has had or is due to undergo stoma surgery. The event will take place on the 08 June in the Clayton Hotel, Galway from 5pm to 9pm with talks starting at 6pm to 7pm. Family members, friends and carers are also welcome to attend.
The event titled ‘A stoma in your life’ will focus on quality of life issues and looking towards positive influences on living with a stoma.

European Heart Failure Awareness Week occurs between 01 to 07 May. “Let’s Bump up the Pump” is a new campaign devised by the Irish Association of Heart Failure Nurses (IAHFN) to raise awareness around heart failure, with a focus on prevention, early detection and also to provide education around how to live well with this condition.
The Urology Department at University Hospital Galway has picked up a prestigious award at an international Urology Conference.
The European Association of Urology Nursing Conference took place in Milan, Italy last month. It saw the UHG Urology Department awarded second prize for setting up a clinical-academic partnered hybrid journal and research club.
Following a very busy bank holiday weekend, the Emergency Department at University Hospital Galway remains under significant pressure today. 251 people attended the ED at UHG yesterday, Monday March 20th.
The hospital is advising that patients who attend ED for routine and non-urgent treatment will experience very long waiting times.
As always, people who do require emergency care are encouraged to attend EDs where they will be prioritised.

A very generous donation of €40,500 was recently presented to the Intensive Care Unit and the Patient Comfort Fund at University Hospital Galway (UHG) in memory of the late Mary Kenny from Loughrea, Co Galway. In addition, €5,000 was donated to Strange Boat Donor Foundation – The National Organ Donor Commemorative Garden (Circle of Life) located in Galway, and €2,000 to Quest Brain Injury Services, Galway.
