Roscommon University Hospital Appoints Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Emergency Nursing at Roscommon Injury Unit

Newly appointed Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Emergency Nursing at Roscommon Injury Unit, Méabh Casey.

Roscommon University Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Méabh Casey as Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) in Emergency Nursing at Roscommon Injury Unit.

In her new role, Méabh provides comprehensive, autonomous care across the full patient pathway, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prescribing, referral, follow-up and discharge. She is responsible for the clinical management of a wide range of injuries in patients aged over five years, essentially non-life-threatening and non-limb-threatening injuries and non-complex soft tissue injuries including sprains and strains, suspected fractures of the arm or leg, minor scalds and burns, cuts and lacerations, and the removal of foreign objects from the nose, eyes and ears.

Méabh also has the authority to refer patients directly, where appropriate, to specialist services including Orthopaedics, Plastics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Frailty Services.

After graduating from University College Dublin (UCD) with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Nursing in 2011, Méabh began her career as a Staff Nurse in the Emergency Department at the Mater Hospital, Dublin. During her time there, she developed a strong interest in the fast-paced and diverse environment of emergency nursing and completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Emergency Nursing through UCD.

After six years at the Mater Hospital, Méabh relocated closer to her home in Moate, County Westmeath, where she joined the Emergency Department at the Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore. She later progressed to the role of Clinical Nurse Manager. During this time, she completed a Professional Certificate in Referring for Radiological Procedures and a Professional Diploma in the Prescription of Medication, further enhancing her clinical expertise.

Méabh joined Roscommon University Hospital in 2023 as a Candidate Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Emergency Nursing. During her two-year candidacy, Méabh completed a Master of Science in Advanced Practice (Nursing) at the University of Galway, enabling her to register and practise as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner.

Advanced Nurse Practitioners represent the highest level of clinical expertise within the nursing profession in Ireland. With an expanded scope of practice and increased clinical autonomy, ANPs are authorised to assess, diagnose, prescribe and independently manage patient care, improving access to specialist treatment and enhancing patient outcomes.

Speaking about her appointment, Méabh said: “I am honoured to take up the role of Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Emergency Nursing at Roscommon University Hospital. I am passionate about providing timely, high-quality care and enhancing the patient experience. The varied nature of minor injuries is especially rewarding, and I look forward to working with colleagues to continue developing the Injury Unit and ensuring patients receive safe, efficient and compassionate care close to home.”

Ursula Morgan, Director of Nursing at Roscommon University Hospital said: “Roscommon Injury Unit is constantly evolving in response to increasing demand for patient care. With a strong emphasis on high-quality, patient-centred care, the unit continues to demonstrate excellence in the delivery of urgent care services. In 2025, the unit treated 19,693 patients, representing a 20.4% increase compared to 2024.

“The appointment of Meabh brings the number of Advanced Nurse Practitioners in the unit to eight, further enhancing our capacity to provide timely, expert care while continuing to improve the patient experience and maintain the highest standards of clinical excellence.”

Utilising the advanced clinical expertise and autonomy of Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Roscommon Injury Unit provides timely assessment, diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of minor injuries. This ensures patients receive high-quality care closer to home, while also supporting a more sustainable healthcare system by reducing waiting times and easing pressure on busy Emergency Departments.
