Local company Fort Wayne Metals reached out to management at Mayo University Hospital in April during the COVID-19 pandemic, to offer practical support and help. Through a series of calls and video conferences, the hospital was able to access a wide range of knowledge around process and quality improvement. The initial work included a brainstorming session that ultimately led to the establishment of an internal Champions Team, consisting of staff from a range of jobs in the hospital.
Mayo University Hospital is delighted to announce that upgrade works to A Ward, B Ward and the Paediatric Ward are due to commence on 17 August. The works involve replacing and upgrading the windows on these wards and replacing all the toilets and showers on A Ward and B Ward. The works are due to be completed by the end of October.
The team at Mayo University Hospital (MUH) are continuing to work towards the resumption of services which had paused or were restricted over the last number of months due to COVID-19.
As part of this work, the Radiology Department are putting measures in place to ensure that patients can access plain radiography/ ‘x-ray’, MRI, CT, Ultrasound and other diagnostic and interventional procedures in a safe way.
Monday, 20th July, 2020. Health Innovation Hub Ireland (HIHI), the Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director (ONMSD), and National Doctors Training and Planning (NDTP) concluded their Spark Ignite Innovation competition with a national final on Wednesday 15th July. The Spark Ignite Programme 2020, which was launched in February this year, is the only staff facing innovation competition open to all 115,000+ HSE staff across all disciplines and departments.
The team at Mayo University Hospital have resumed the Paediatric Clinics and have put a number of new measures in place to ensure the clinics can be run safely in the context of COVID-19.
In response to the COVID outbreak, the Orthopaedic and Physiotherapy teams at Mayo University Hospital (MUH) developed virtual clinics to assess patients with fractures who could be managed remotely. With the support of hospital management and co-operation from Radiology, Administration and Nursing staff, the special clinics have minimised hospital visits for hundreds of patients, keeping them safe at home as much as possible
Cardiology outpatient appointments and clinics are now gradually resuming at Mayo University Hospital (MUH). In addition, a new dedicated Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) has opened in the hospital. The unit, which was developed as part of the hospitals COVID-19 planning, has resulted in an increase of 12 monitored specialist cardiology beds.
The Occupational Therapy Department at Mayo University Hospital are inviting family and friends of patients in the hospital to email a letter, photo or video which will be printed, popped into an envelope and delivered to their loved one in hospital. Videos are loaded onto a tablet which is brought to the patient’s bedside to view.
Since 2007, Mayo University Hospital (MUH) has enabled over 160 physiotherapy students from Ireland and overseas to undertake clinical placements as part of their third level qualification. The hospital has a formal arrangement with the University of Limerick and the Singapore Institute of Technology, via a partnership with Trinity College Dublin, to facilitate up to 18 student placements each academic year.
