Hand Hygiene Training at 100% for Medical Staff at Mayo University Hospital

The Infection Prevention and Control Team at Mayo University Hospital (MUH) are delivering a rolling schedule of hand hygiene training which has resulted in 100% attendance by the Medical Staff and an overall total of 98.41% attendance by all staff of Mayo University Hospital.

The Emergency Department at Mayo University Hospital is extremely busy today, Monday 30 December. The hospital has admitted a lot of seriously ill patients over the last three days; some patients from yesterday remain in the Emergency Department (ED) awaiting an inpatient bed.

Today, Monday 14 October, Mayo University Hospital has started a renewed focus on keeping the area around the hospital and the hospital grounds smoke free.

In 2014 the hospital introduced a smoke free campus policy and after an initial period of success, compliance with the policy has started to reduce with patients and visitors frequently seen smoking outside the main entrances of the hospital.

Mayo University Hospital has introduced 35 mobile ‘point of care’ computers which are available for staff in the wards throughout the hospital and in the Emergency Department. Each computer has a clinical grade keyboard and mouse which can be deep cleaned for infection control purposes.

Knowing My Medicines
Members of our Medication Safety Committee at Mayo University Hospital together with our Patient Experience Advisors have launched a new initiative at the hospital.

We want to spread the message that we would like patients to keep an up to date list of their medications and bring it with them should they need to attend the hospital. This will help us and our patients manage medicines more safely . Everybody has a role to play in medication safety and we hope that we can by this initiative  improve communication around medicines.
