The 2011 Annual Report for Symptomatic Breast Care Services at Galway University Hospitals (GUH) was launched on Friday 22 February at the Symptomatic Breast Unit.
On Friday 08 February the Cardiac Rehabilitation Service at Roscommon Hospital along with Croí West of Ireland Heart and Stroke Centre, offered free heart health screening for farmers at the Roscommon livestock Mart.
The free cardiac risk assessment included a pulse check, blood pressure check, weight and body mass index measurement and dietary and physical assessment.
One of the priorities for the Galway and Roscommon University Hospital Group (Galway University Hospitals, Portiuncula Hospital Ballinasloe and Roscommon Hospital) in 2013 is to address the outpatient waiting list and to meet the Department of Health’s Special Delivery Unit (SDU) target that no patient should wait longer than 12 months; this target has to be met by the end of November.
Galway University Hospitals is holding an information day on Friday 22 February to raise awareness about oesophageal cancer. The event will take place in the main foyer of UHG from 10am until 3pm and Clinical Nurse Specialists in Upper GI Cancer and Colorectal Cancer will be available to talk to members of the public who may have concerns or questions.
Who is Afraid of the Big Bad Woods?” an exhibition by Galway artist Maev Lenaghan opens this week at the Arts Corridor in University Hospital Galway and runs until 15 March.
A new Ambulatory Care and Diagnostic Centre (ACAD) has opened at Roscommon Hospital. The new centre will provide diagnostic services and day surgery carried out under local anaesthetic.
Elaine Prendergast, General Manager, Roscommon Hospital said, “The new ACAD is located near the Urgent Care Centre and was where we previously provided the Medical Assessment Unit service. Since the Medical Assessment Unit moved to its current location, the space was left unused.
To mark National No Smoking Day, Galway University Hospitals is hosting an information day on quitting smoking from 10am to 4pm on Wednesday 13 February in the main foyer of UHG.
The information day is open to members of the public and will include free carbon monoxide checks and details on how to avail of the stop smoking service at the hospital.
Prostate Cancer treatment to be significantly enhanced by new NCCP National Service
The National Cancer Control Programme launched a new national service for the treatment of prostate cancer yesterday, Monday 28 January. The NCCP National Prostate Brachytherapy Service provides patients with a once off treatment option that involves the implantation of radiotherapy seeds directly into the prostate as an alternative to conventional radiotherapy treatments.
Management from the Galway and Roscommon University Hospital Group met with Oireachtas and Regional Health Forum West members from Galway and Roscommon today (Friday 25 January) to review the development of the Group after one year and to outline the priorities for the Group in 2013.
Galway University Hospitals is marking Lung Cancer Awareness Month with a number of events including an information day in the foyer of UHG on Wednesday 23 January with the Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Centre and a talk on lung cancer with Tuam Cancer Care Centre in the Ard Rí House Hotel, Tuam on Thursday 31 January.
