Letterkenny University Hospital Highlights the Vital Role of Midwives for International Day of the Midwife

Letterkenny University Hospital is proud to celebrate International Day of the Midwife today (05 May), by recognising the invaluable contribution midwives make to the health and wellbeing of mothers, babies and families. Helping support women and families through some of life’s most meaningful moments.

Midwives play a vital role in providing safe, compassionate and continuous care throughout pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period, combining clinical expertise with emotional support for women and families at every stage of their maternity journey.

Teresa McDaid, who recently welcomed her baby at Letterkenny University Hospital, shared her experience, “The midwives at Letterkenny University Hospital were absolutely incredible. They supported me every step of the way and made me feel safe and cared for as a mum. I can’t thank them enough for everything they did for me and my baby.”

Midwife Joanne Glynn highlighted the rewarding nature of her role, “Being a Midwife at Letterkenny University Hospital is an absolute privilege. Every day brings new life, and it’s a joy to support women through one of the most important experiences of their life’s and be part of such a wonderful team.”

Marion Doogan, Director of Midwifery at Letterkenny University Hospital emphasised the central role midwives play in delivering high quality care, “Midwifery is at the heart of compassionate, person centred care. It is a privilege to lead and work alongside such dedicated professionals at Letterkenny University Hospital, who support women and families with skill, kindness and respect every day.”

International Day of the Midwife is celebrated every year on the 05 May and shines a light on the essential role Midwifes play worldwide.
