About us

The Pathology Laboratory provides a comprehensive testing service to the clinicians and patients of Mayo University Hospital and our external users i.e. Primary Care/ General Practitioners, Community Nursing Units/Homes and District Hospitals within the surrounding areas of Mayo, Sligo and Galway.

Pathology Laboratory departments include Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Histopathology and Microbiology. A Haemovigilance service is based in the Pathology Laboratory, working closely with the Blood Transfusion department, to provide a service within the hospital. Haemovigilance and Traceability services are also provided to the Mayo Hospice, Castlebar.

Mortuary Services are also provided at Mayo University Hospital.

An "On-Call" Service is provided outside routine working hours for urgent requests in Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Microbiology.
By following standardised protocols, using appropriate collection devices, and maintaining aseptic techniques, medical scientists can obtain representative samples, facilitating accurate interpretation and diagnosis. This information is available in our Pathology Laboratory User Manual, blood collection Tubes used in MUH and In-House/ Referral test directory below.
