Galway University Hospitals show increase in attendance and reduction in waiting lists for 2024

Figures released by Galway University Hospitals (GUH) for 2024 demonstrate a sustained increase in activity and a reduction in waiting lists.

Despite an incredibly busy year GUH has made significant progress in reducing wait lists.

University Hospital Galway becomes first public hospital to employ innovative cardiac procedure

University Hospital Galway has become the first public hospital in the country to employ the 'Convergent Procedure', a ground-breaking approach for treating atrial fibrillation (Afib), putting it at the pinnacle of heart surgery.

Atrial fibrillation affects more than 1-2% of the population with increasing incidence in the over 65s, and if left untreated, can lead to blood clots, stoke, heart failure and other heart-relation complications.

"Art@work 21" annual staff exhibition launched at University Hospital Galway

Saolta Arts launched Art@Work 21, an exhibition by hospital staff running until the end of January. Tony Canavan, Regional Executive Officer of HSE West and North West, officially launched the exhibition on Friday, 20 December on the Art Corridor of University Hospital Galway. 

Galway University Hospitals welcomes the publication of the National Inpatient Experience Survey 2024

The results of the National Inpatient Experience Survey, carried out in all public hospitals in Ireland in May, have been published. This is the sixth year that the survey has been carried out and was an opportunity for patients of Galway University Hospitals to describe their experiences in hospital.

The event, held on Wednesday 11 December, was a warm celebration of art, healing and community. Susan Millar DuMars, officially launched Circus of Circles, with music provided by Francis Edwards.

The introduction of a Modernised Care Pathway for Nurse-Led Urology Clinics at Galway and Portiuncula University Hospitals has significantly reduced waiting times for urology patients awaiting assessment for Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS).

The Cardiothoracic team at University Hospital Galway have won a HSE Excellence Award for their project ‘Minimally Invasive Vessel Harvesting for Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts’ in the Innovation in Service Delivery Category on 28th November 2024.

The Children’s Remembrance Day Committee at University Hospital Galway (UHG) has launched its annual ‘Sponsor a Christmas Tree Light’ 2024.  The sale of the lights was officially launched by Santa Claus.

A light can be sponsored on the Christmas tree at University Hospital Galway in memory of the deceased or as a gift to a loved one. These lights give families an opportunity to remember their loved ones in a special way over the festive season. 

University Hospital Galway first in the country to use new Biological Aortic Heart Valve

University Hospital Galway is the first hospital in the country to use a new biological aortic heart valve, putting it at the forefront of valvular heart surgery.  

Surgical aortic valve replacement is a surgical procedure in which a diseased aortic valve is removed and replaced with a new tissue-based or mechanical valve. This takes over the original valve’s function to enable oxygen-rich blood to flow efficiently out of the heart.
