Sligo University Hospital introduces minimally invasive, same day hip replacement surgery

Eight patients have undergone hip replacement surgery as a day case procedure in Sligo University Hospital (SUH) over the past three months. This surgery is based on the Direct Anterior Muscle Sparing Minimally Invasive approach and SUH is currently the only public hospital in Ireland providing same day hip replacement using this technique.

Staff and patients in Sligo University Hospital were thrilled to receive a visit from four local athletes who competed in the Olympics and Paralympics this summer.

Chris O'Donnell, Lauren Cadden, Dean Clancy and Martin Gordon visited the hospital on Monday to meet with patients and staff and were given a very warm welcome by our younger patients in the Paediatric Ward.

Sligo University Hospital welcomes publication of HIQA report following inspection

Sligo University Hospital (SUH) welcomes the publication by Health Information Quality Authority (HIQA) of its report into its inspection of three areas at the hospital. An unannounced inspection was carried out at the hospital on the 12th and 13th of July 2023.

The three clinical areas assessed were the Emergency Department, Medical South and Surgical North.

The focus of the inspection was to monitor compliance with the National Standards for Safer Better Healthcare.

Sligo University Hospital’s Nursing Class of 1974 commemorated

“Our roots are in Sligo but our shoots spread worldwide”, that’s the inscription on the plaque at Sligo University Hospital which was installed to commemorate the hospital’s first nurses-in-training. 

The first intake of student nurses joined Sligo University Hospital in 1974 and the foundation was laid for the next 50 years of professionalism, compassion and dedication to patients.

Invitation to International Women’s Day healthcare conference hosted by Sligo University Hospital

Sligo University Hospital extends an invitation to women of all ages to a free public conference to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The conference takes place on Friday 8th March, 2024 in the Clayton Hotel, Sligo from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

Brídín Bell (Advanced Nurse Practitioner) and Ms Juliana Henry (Director of Midwifery in the Women and Children’s Service SUH) are hosting the conference along with the Centre of Nursing and Midwifery Sligo.

A new pilot service, which will further enhance midwifery care, has been launched by the Maternity Department at Sligo University Hospital (SUH). The establishment of a community midwifery service, as an outreach service from the hospital, will provide women and babies with integrated care as close to home as possible.

SUH is managing five COVID outbreaks and the public are asked to be extra vigilant if visiting the hospital. Do not visit the hospital if you are feeling unwell.
