Due to a rapid increase in COVID-19 infection rates in Galway, the HSE has joined with An Garda Síochána and Local Government to appeal to the public to stay vigilant and halt the spread of the virus in the community.
The three principle agencies have come together to highlight the gravity of the public health risk in Galway where there is a tenfold increase in COVID-19 daily infection rate compared to the first wave.
It has been an extremely busy weekend at Letterkenny University Hospital. Throughout the weekend there has been a large number of patients presenting with suspect or confirmed COVID 19, many of whom required admission to the hospital.

Face to Face outpatient appointments at Sligo University Hospital are being deferred for the next two weeks. The hospital is now holding virtual outpatient clinics with some exceptions.
Patients who previously received a letter confirming an outpatient appointment are asked not to attend the appointment unless they get a call from the hospital confirming that the appointment is going ahead.
The hospitals in the Saolta Group are deferring all but very urgent and time critical inpatient and day surgery from 05 January. Outpatient clinics will also be curtailed and some of these will take place virtually unless it is absolutely necessary for patients to be seen.
The roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccination campaign began in Portiuncula University Hospital today, Wednesday January 6th. Louise Ann McGrath, Clinical Nurse Manager 2, St John’s Ward was the first staff member in the hospital to receive the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine. Louise received the vaccine from her nursing colleague, Mary Barrett, Assistant Director of Nursing and Peer Vaccinator.
