The Emergency Department at Mayo University Hospital is under significant pressure today with a high level of admissions to the hospital leading to long waiting times.
Mayo University Hospital (MUH) invites anyone who has experienced the loss of an infant, baby or pregnancy to come to a remembrance service next week. The service will be held at 7pm on Friday 24 February in St Mary’s Campus, Atlantic Technical University (beside the hospital, F23 X853).
Due to an outbreak of the winter vomiting bug (Norovirus) in one of the wards in Mayo University Hospital (MUH), the hospital is advising that visits to the affected ward will be restricted to those who have reason to visit on compassionate grounds.
MUH is also requesting that people do not visit the hospital if they are feeling unwell form symptoms of winter vomiting or flu like symptoms.
The Irish Heart Foundation has awarded the Gold Happy Heart Award to the catering team Mayo University Hospital in recognition of the ongoing work at the hospital to promote healthy eating in the workplace.
The Awards were launched by the Irish Heart Foundation almost 30 years ago to encourage healthcare catering facilities to adopt healthier cooking practices and provide strategies to promote healthy choice.
Mayo University Hospital welcomes the publication of the HIQA report on the inspection of MUH which took place in August 2022.
The focus of the inspection was to monitor the National Standards for Safer Better Healthcare. HIQA’s inspection focused on key standards relating to capacity and capability under the themes of leadership, governance and management and workforce.
The inspection visited the emergency department, a medical ward and a surgical ward.
The emergency electrical repairs require structural works which will cause disruption to all vehicle access to the site.
These works will impact the set down areas outside the front of the hospital at the Emergency Department and main reception entrance. The works will commence at 2am tomorrow Friday, 02 December and continue into Saturday 03 December.

Mayo University Hospital (MUH) has a long-standing relationship with Londiani Sub-County Hospital in Kericho County. This partnership was established 14 years ago to enable shared learning between healthcare workers in western Kenya and western Ireland, with the aim of improving health outcomes for all.

All available beds are in use. Every effort is being made to discharge patients who are ready to go home so that beds will become available for patients who need to be admitted, at the earliest opportunity.
A new Wellness Walkway at Mayo University Hospital was officially launched last week by Prof Brian Dolan OBE.
The walkway, which is located on the first floor of the hospital, aims to promote the health and wellbeing of patients during their recovery from illness and injury. The walkway is 130m long with exercise stations and seated areas to allow patients get away from the busy ward environment.
Mayo University Hospital (MUH) has officially opened a designated room in the Maternity Unit for bereaved families. The Rose Room is named in memory of baby Hope Rose Caulfield who sadly died in 2017 aged 9 days old. Hope Rose’s parents Sandra and Jonathan Caulfield from Kiltimagh have fundraised significantly for the renovation of this space which will support the hospital in providing comfort and solace to families dealing with loss.
