The Saolta University Health Care Group and Galway University Hospitals welcome the progress in developing a new surgical hub in the city.
The hub, on the grounds of Merlin Park University Hospital will provide a significant uplift in surgical capacity for the region. It will reduce waiting times for day case procedures by significantly increasing the capacity for elective day case surgery in a dedicated facility.
Galway University Hospitals is delighted to announce that work is underway on the new Adult Cystic Out Patient Department.
Once complete, the Adult CF OPD will have sufficient capacity, design features and specification to allow for best practices in Cystic Fibrosis treatment.
The new build will minimise cross infection and enable the Merlin Park University Hospital CF multidisciplinary professional team to provide long-term, recurrent support for ambulatory patients.
The Emergency Department (ED) at Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) has been extremely busy over the past few days and the hospital is advising that patients who attend ED for routine and non-urgent treatment will experience very long waiting times. 181 people attended the ED yesterday, Monday 18 September, resulting in 34 patient admissions.

The National Ambulance Service (NAS) clinical decontamination team is conducting a demonstration with Mayo University Hospital (MUH) this Tuesday. NAS will set up a clinical decontamination tent at the hospital and provide a full demonstration on clinical decontamination to the staff at MUH. Clinical decontamination may be required at a hospital site for patients who self-present and haven’t been decontaminated at site of an emergency that involved potential exposure to a chemical hazard.
Portiuncula University Hospital has officially opened the Dunlo Ward today, Monday, 18 September, a new 12 bed ward comprising of eight single ensuite rooms and two double ensuite rooms.
The additional beds was part of the capital funding from the HSE 2020 Capital Plan, costing in excess of €5m for the design, build and equipping of the ward.

The Emergency Department in Sligo University Hospital is extremely busy today with high numbers of patients being admitted, many of whom present with complex needs requiring admission. The hospital is advising that patients who attend ED for routine and non-urgent treatment will experience very long waiting times. There are 38 patients on trolleys awaiting admission to an inpatient bed and we apologise to those patients and their families for the upset this is causing.
